On a mountain above the sea there is a rock, and the rock has stood there since the world began, taking in sun and rain and moonlight. One day it splits open, and something climbs out.
What climbs out is a monkey — an ordinary-looking monkey, except that he was born of stone, has no mother or father, and is afraid of nothing whatever.
This is how the most troublesome character in Chinese literature begins: a stone monkey, a troop of ordinary monkeys, a waterfall that nobody dares go behind, and a question that will not leave him alone once it has occurred to him. Everything here dies eventually. What would it take not to?
