Tomas Makes Soup
Tomas had never made soup before, but the recipe looked easy.
The instructor put a big pot on the cooker and smiled at the class. “Tomato soup is perfect for a first lesson. Let's start.”
First, they read the recipe together. There were only six ingredients: tomatoes, an onion, garlic, salt, water, and a little oil.
“Now, slice the onion,” the instructor said. Tomas picked up his knife and cut the onion into thin pieces. His eyes started to water, but he kept going.
“After that, fry the onion in the oil,” she said. “When it turns soft and golden, add the tomatoes.”
Tomas waited, then he added everything to the pot. The mixture began to bubble. The kitchen smelled wonderful.
“Finally, cook it for twenty minutes,” the instructor said. “You don't need the oven for this one — just the cooker.”
Twenty minutes later, Tomas tasted his soup. It was warm, sweet, and a little salty. It was the best soup he had ever made.
The instructor tried a spoon too. “See? You're a cook now,” she said.
Tomas grinned. “I think I'll make this every Saturday.”
