The Packet With No Picture
(A garden centre near Harrogate, on a wet Tuesday.)
Ottilie: I want to grow something. I’ve never grown anything.
Bram: Then start with beans. It’s our best product.
Ottilie: What does the packet say?
Bram: Plant them in May. Pick them in August. Water them every afternoon.
Ottilie: And those?
Bram: Carrots. Plant in May too, pick in September.
Ottilie: Do they come from far away?
Bram: From a farm near York. Not a lot of travel.
Ottilie: I can’t decide. What’s this one? There’s no picture on it.
Bram: Sweet peas. There’s no picture because the picture isn’t the good part.
Ottilie: What’s the good part?
Bram: In July you open your window at night, and the whole bedroom smells of them.
Ottilie: I’ll take that one.
Bram: Just that one?
Ottilie: Just that one.
