My Friend Knows Best
I stood in front of the mirror and turned around. The suit fit perfectly. Dark blue, a nice tie, clean shoes. I looked good. I was sure of it.
“So?” I said. “How do I look?”
My best friend Yuki sat on my bed, eating my crisps. She looked at me for a long moment. Too long.
“You look like you’re going to a job interview,” she said.
“It’s a wedding!”
“Exactly. A wedding is happier than a job interview. That suit is too serious. And the tie is too tight — you can’t even breathe.”
She was right about the tie. I pulled it loose. “Better?”
“A little. But the suit is still too dark. It’s June. Everyone will wear light colors, and you’ll look like a sad businessman.”
I sat down next to her. “I don’t know about fashion. That’s your job. What should I wear?”
She stood up, opened my cupboard, and pulled out a lighter grey suit and a soft pink shirt. No tie.
“This,” she said. “Open collar. Roll up the sleeves a little. You’ll look relaxed, not like a designer robot.”
I tried it on. I had to admit, it was better. Much better.
“How do you always know?” I asked.
She took another crisp and smiled. “Because I’m not the one wearing it. It’s always easier to dress someone else.”
