The Other Fourteen
(Outside a red-brick building on Bellwood Road, ten to seven in the evening.)
Kwame: Hi, is that Delia? I'm your driver. I'm at fourteen Bellwood Road and there's no flat four.
Delia: There's a flat four. I'm in it.
Kwame: Well, this door has flat one, flat two, flat three, and a shop that sells phone cases.
Delia: A shop? There's no shop on my road.
Kwame: What's your postcode?
Delia: BN14 5RG.
(Kwame turns the parcel over and reads the label.)
Kwame: Mine says BN2 5RG.
Delia: Then you're in Southbourne. I'm in Hedford. There are two Bellwood Roads.
Kwame: Two Bellwood Roads.
Delia: Same street name, same house number, different postcode. My mum gets it wrong every Christmas.
Kwame: And how far is Hedford?
Delia: Twenty minutes. A bit more tonight, because the bridge is closed.
Kwame: Right. I've got nine more parcels in Southbourne. You're getting yours last.
Delia: How late is last?
Kwame: Half past eight.
Delia: Okay. Have you got my phone number, for when you're close?
Kwame: Delia. I'm using it.
Delia: Yes. Sorry.
Kwame: Just wait by your door and hold up your house number.
Delia: It's screwed to the wall.
Kwame: Then bring a chair.
