If We Won
(Tom and Nadia at the kitchen table. A lottery ticket between them.)
Tom: Okay. Imagine we win. The full sixty million. What's the first thing you'd buy?
Nadia: An island.
Tom: An island? You wouldn't even buy a house first?
Nadia: If I won sixty million, I wouldn't need a house. I'd live on the island.
Tom: On the island. With no house.
Nadia: Fine, I'd build a house on the island. What would you do, then?
Tom: I'd pay someone to do my job, and I'd keep going to work.
Nadia: You'd still go to work? Are you serious?
Tom: I love my job. I just don't love doing it.
Nadia: That's the saddest thing I've ever heard.
Tom: All right, what would you really do? Honestly.
Nadia: Honestly? I'd buy this flat, and I'd never have to talk to the landlord again.
Tom: Now that's a real dream. Forget the island.
Nadia: Forget the island. So. Should we check the numbers?
Tom: We don't have to. The dream's better than the answer.
(Tom turns the ticket face down.)
Nadia: One number. We got one number.
Tom: Buy the island next week, then.
