The Lazy Sheep
(Sunday morning. Zofia comes into the bedroom. Miriam is under a thick blanket.)
Zofia: Grandma! Grandma, are you awake?
Miriam: No.
Zofia: I've got a joke. Why doesn't the lazy sheep get up?
Miriam: I don't know. Why?
Zofia: Because his bed is very comfortable!
(Zofia laughs. Miriam doesn't.)
Miriam: Zofia, that isn't a joke. That's a sheep with a good bed.
Zofia: It's funny!
Miriam: It isn't funny. A joke needs a surprise at the end.
Zofia: OK, wait. I've got a better one. Why doesn't the sheep get up in winter?
Miriam: Why?
Zofia: Because his socks are wet!
Miriam: Zofia.
Zofia: Yes, that one's bad too. Then you make a joke.
Miriam: All right. Why doesn't the grandmother get up on Sunday?
Zofia: I don't know. Why?
Miriam: Because it's Sunday.
(Miriam pulls the blanket up to her nose and closes her eyes.)
Zofia: That isn't a joke either!
Miriam: No. It's true. Now go and ask your dad about breakfast.
