One New Word
Yara and Kenji sat at the kitchen table. They wanted to learn new words.
“I want one new word,” said Yara. “An easy word, please.”
“Okay. This is a 'cup,'” said Kenji. He held up his cup. “Now you say it.”
“Cup,” said Yara. “I like this word. Give me the opposite.”
Kenji laughed. “A cup has no opposite!” “But here is a good pair. Hot and cold. Hot is the opposite of cold.”
“Hot, cold,” said Yara. “Now an example, please. A sentence.”
“This tea is hot,” said Kenji. “Now you say it.”
“This tea is hot,” said Yara. “And what is the meaning of 'tea'?”
Kenji pointed at her cup. “The tea is in your cup. You drink it now.”
Yara looked down and smiled. “Oh! Good practice,” she said. “I want more words tomorrow.”
