Every Bottle Helps
This week is Recycling Week at the Greenwood Community Centre. A volunteer named Petra is teaching people how to recycle better, and she has some simple advice.
“Most people want to help the environment,” Petra says. “But they make small mistakes. We should learn to do it right.”
The biggest problem is plastic. People throw away a lot of plastic every day, and most of it goes to one big rubbish pile. “You should wash your plastic bottles before you recycle them,” Petra says. “A dirty bottle can spoil a whole box of clean ones.”
She also says we should think before we buy. The best way to help is to reduce our rubbish. “If you don't buy it, you don't have to recycle it,” she says. “Bring your own bag to the shop. Buy less plastic.”
Some materials are easy to recycle. Glass, paper, and metal can become new things again and again. Other materials are harder. “Not every plastic can be recycled,” Petra explains. “Check the small number on the bottom.”
At the end of the week, the community centre will weigh all the rubbish it saved. Last year, the town recycled two tonnes of material in seven days.
“We can't fix everything,” Petra says. “But every bottle helps. Small changes are still changes.”
