Two Cookies and No Grapes
(The lunchroom at Bell Street School. Tuesday, twelve o'clock.)
Iris: Does anyone want to trade? I have two cookies.
Owen: Cookies! I have grapes. Green ones.
Iris: Grapes are better for you. My mom says that every day.
Owen: Is your mom here?
Iris: No.
Owen: Then take the grapes. All of them.
(Iris puts the grapes on her tray. Owen takes one cookie.)
Iris: You can give it back if you don't like it.
Owen: I like it. It's the best cookie in this room.
Iris: My grandma makes them on Sundays.
Owen: Can I have the other one too?
Iris: For what? You don't have any grapes now.
Owen: Hmm. Does anybody have grapes? I need to trade again.
