The Diet Book
(Winifred’s farm shop near Norwich. Her son Emeka comes in with a book.)
Emeka: Mum, I got you this. It’s a diet book.
Winifred: Read me some.
Emeka: Page one. Eat vegetables every day. Carrots, onions, peppers.
(Winifred points at those boxes by the door.)
Winifred: Carrots. Onions. Peppers. Two pounds a bag.
Emeka: Page four. Fruit is better than ice cream. Apples, bananas, oranges.
Winifred: The apples are behind you. The oranges came this morning.
Emeka: Page nine. Drink water and juice.
Winifred: The juice is next to the potatoes.
Emeka: Mum, it’s good advice.
Winifred: It’s my shop.
Emeka: Page twenty. It says healthy food is expensive.
Winifred: How much was the book?
Emeka: Fourteen pounds.
Winifred: The carrots are two.
