Ready for Quiet
Fatima had never worked in an office before. She had worked in shops and cafés, but never in a quiet place like this one.
The employer met her by the window. The floor was almost empty. Only a few people sat at desks, typing softly.
“Tell me about your experience,” he said.
“I’ve worked with people for six years,” Fatima said. “I’ve managed a small team. I’m good with customers, and I learn fast.”
The employer nodded. “We’re a small company. Quiet, as you can see. Would you be happy here, after a busy café?”
Fatima looked around at the still, grey room. For a moment she missed the noise, the steam, the orders shouted across the counter.
“I think I would,” she said slowly. “I think I’m ready for quiet.”
He smiled. “Then welcome to the company. You start Monday.”
