One Small Roar
I'm Jasper. I'm a lion, and I live at the small zoo in Bakersfield. The elephant lives next to me. She's very big and very quiet.
It's August and the days are hot. On Monday I roar at the elephant. It's a big roar, a good roar. The elephant looks at the sky. She doesn't move.
On Tuesday I take my ball to the fence. I push it under. The elephant looks at the ball, and then she looks at the sky again. She doesn't move. I take my ball back.
On Wednesday it's hotter. I'm on my rock. I'm hot and I'm not clean. Then — water! There's cold water all around me. The elephant has water in her long nose, and now the water is on my head and on my feet.
I'm cool. I'm clean. I roar a small roar, and this time the elephant looks at me.
