Machine Four
(A supermarket in Osaka, seven at night. Kaito puts a can of cold tea on the self-checkout machine.)
Machine: Card, please.
Kaito: I don't have a card. I have money.
Machine: Card, please.
Kaito: I'm ten. Ten-year-old boys don't have cards.
Machine: Card, please.
(A worker comes with a box of bread.)
Worker: This machine takes cards. It's on the board.
Kaito: What board?
Worker: That little green board, up there. Machine four takes money. Come with me.
Kaito: Can I take my tea?
Worker: It isn't your tea yet. It isn't free!
(Kaito pays at machine four with three coins. The machine gives him one coin back.)
Machine: Thank you! Please come again!
Kaito: Not today.
