Do You Really Want It?
Look around you. How many advertisements can you see right now? On your phone, on the street, on the side of a bus. Every year, companies spend more than five hundred billion dollars on advertising. That is a very big number, and it is getting bigger.
Why do they spend so much money? Because advertising works. The average person sees thousands of advertisements every day. Most of them, we forget at once. But some of them stay in our heads. We start to want things we did not want before.
Advertising has changed a lot. In the past, an advertisement was a picture in a newspaper or a short film on the television. Everybody in the country saw the same one. Today, your phone shows you different advertisements from your friend's phone. The company knows what you like. It knows what you bought last week. So the advertisement feels more personal, and more attractive.
Does this affect us? Yes, it does. Studies show that children who watch more advertisements ask for more toys. Adults who see more advertisements for fast food eat more fast food. We like to think we are free, that we choose for ourselves. But our choices are smaller than we think.
This does not mean advertising is bad. Sometimes it tells us about a useful product or a better price. But it is good to stop and ask one simple question. Do I really want this thing? Or does someone just want me to want it?
